Bamburgh was the home of the Victorian heroine Grace Darling and the new Grace Darling museum (well worth a visit) presents an interesting historical background to Grace and her family. Bamburgh Castle is built on an imposing volcanic crag with magnificent views over the famous Bamburgh beach and across to Holy Island and the Farnes.

Saturday - Tour of Berwick Town Walls. Built in 1558 to keep out the marauding Scots who regularlylaid claim to the town, these walls were the most expensive undertaking of England's golden age and are the only intact Elizabethan town walls remaining in England. A mile and three-quarters in length, the ramparts completely surround the town, with only four gates through the walls. Walking around the town walls is a great way to witness Berwick's turbulent history at first hand. You can also take in stunning views over the town and look out towards the wide sandy beaches of the North Sea and the Tweed estuary with its colony of mute swans. After your tour of the walls you can opt to go off and explore Berwick or to visit the Berwick Food Festival which is being held that weekend.

Today they live in a beautiful enclosed 365 acre parkland at Chillingham which has been their home for the last 700 years. On a tour which shows the scenery and the wild cattle at their very best, the warden will take you close to the cattle and tell you about their history, day to day life in the parkland and how the herd structures itself.
